Sustainable Eel Fisheries and Habitat Stewardship

EECo represents North Island eel (tuna) quota holders, with most of the quota owned by iwi. The organisation is committed to harvesting eels responsibly, protecting and improving tuna habitats, and boosting tuna populations.

Eels are an important global food source, recognised by many names such as angulas, tuna, unagi, paling, aal, igat, угорь, 日本鰻, 장어, 河鳗, and Węgorz.

Dedicated to sustainability, EECo follows practices that ensure the long-term health of eel stocks. New Zealand is a leader in fishery management, and the ongoing development of the Quota Management System (QMS) underscores this commitment to responsible stewardship.

Improvements in habitat and stock levels have been achieved through the efforts of landowners and taxpayers; however, continuous work is still needed to support and sustain these gains.

The Eel Enhancement Company represents the interests of North Island eel quota owners. EECo includes individuals, private companies and Maori entities. Iwi control or hold approx. 50% of North Island eel quota.

Our primary function is to protect and enhance the eel fishery.
